AN ART-FILLED AFTERNOON AT SMoCA

Art In Unexpected Places

Off an atrium near the entrance of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is a small, quiet oval room.

The walls are completely smooth and bare. Around the perimeter is a built-in concrete bench, where the visitor can rest. The ceiling opens to an oval oculus, exposing the sky. Sunlight entering from above paints an image on the walls that travels around the room throughout the day, creating a piece of kinetic art composed of concrete, sunlight and sky. It is a peaceful, contemplative space.

The museum's site formerly housed a movie theater, which was repurposed and retrofitted by Phoenix architect Will Bruder to create today's minimalist building, in itself a work of art. The museum opened in 1999.

Here are just a few examples of art currently on display.

TAL's field trips are always interesting and fun, as anyone who went on last year's trip to the Phoenix Airport Museum at Sky Harbor can attest. Open only to members, trips are just another reason to join or renew your membership to one of Terravita's greatest assets.

Infinite

"Infinite"— an immersive, experiential installation. Hundreds of glowing globes strung from the ceiling change colors almost imperceptibly as the viewer walks among them.

Art is everywhere, including the floors. StaF at the museum placed tape for the concentric circles to direct the viewer to the art above.
