Is “AI Art” Really Art?

Just Chillin'

“Tools don‘t create art, artists do. Just as paint doesn‘t create a painting, the artist does.” — Robert LaPolice

More than a hundred Terravita friends and neighbors filled the Desert Pavilion the evening of April 18 eager to learn more about AI and whether images created with AI tools can be called art. The event marked the opening of the current exhibit, “AI Art by Robert LaPolice”.

AI’s journey to acceptance as art

While some might question whether images generated by artificial intelligence are truly art, Bob reminds us that photography traveled a similar rocky road to acceptance.

During its early years in the mid-1800s, artists viewed photography as a threat. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that a movement to frame photography as an art form emerged, led by modern photography pioneer Alfred Stieglitz. Today we recognize as art the photographs by masters such as Ansel Adams, Edward Curtis, Margaret Bourke-White, Dorothea Lange, Yousuf Karsh, Edward Weston and many more.

If you haven’t already, be sure to see Terravita resident Bob LaPolice’s AI images on display at the DP. Bob has been experimenting with tools for creating images since such tools began appearing. With a creative mind and extensive computer background, Bob applies his technical know-how to producing images that are beautiful, otherworldly and unique.

His images evolve from concepts that he gives to an AI tool via prompts to the software. Then he might go through several stages of refining various options that the tool produces. Ultimately he will fine-tune the results with more traditional image-editing tools. His final images are intriguing art that makes the viewer stop and think.

The exhibit will be on through this summer at the DP.
