Class Description:

This is a great beginner workshop for anyone interested in learning how to use botanicals to transfer their shape and color to fiber.

After a bit of introduction, you will choose the flowers and natural dyes you want to use in your design and place them directly on the silk scarf. Once your custom design is complete, you will roll it up tightly to be steamed for 1 hour. Heat is what causes the flowers and natural dyes to release their color and shape.

While your bundles are steaming, it is time for lunch or a snack, a bit of education about eco dyeing, and a fun eco printed paper project.

Your design surface is a silk scarf that measures 8 x 54 inches. The edges have been nicely hand rolled. The length gives you plenty of options for wearing around your neck, as a decoration on a hat or wrapping around your wrist. The scarf also makes a great gift.

Care of your plant dyed silk scarf: limit exposure to sunlight as natural dyes will fade over time if exposed too long. Wash by hand in cold water and line dry. Iron with a hot iron and yes this works even for silk!

The workshop is limited to 8 participants due to the space required to lay out the silk scarf and space to steam in the steamer.

IMPORTANT: please wear shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting natural dyes on. The dyes will stain your clothing.

 

Instructor Biography:

Lucy Huckery is the fiber artist behind Tall Cactus Studio www.tallcactusstudio.com. She makes eco-printed and felted fiber art creations that are both beautiful and functional. Five years ago, she discovered eco printing (botanical contact printing) and began experimenting on paper using leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds she found in nature. When she tried bundling these same botanicals on fabric, a world of possibilities opened up, and she decided to tailor her craft to focus on fiber art. Today, Lucy transforms eco printed fabric and handmade felt into functional items such as trivets, coasters, placemats, purses, table runners, glasses cases, pin cushions and scarves.
