Class Description:

This is a perfect beginner project for anyone interested in learning how to use botanicals to transfer their shape and color to fiber. After a bit of introduction, you will choose the leaves and flowers you want to use in your design and place them directly on the table runner.

Once your custom design is complete, you will roll it up tightly to be steamed for 1-1/2 hours. Yes, heat is what causes the leaves and flowers to release their color and shape.

While your bundles are steaming, it is time for lunch or a snack, a bit of education about eco dyeing, and a fun eco printed paper project.

Your design surface is a sustainably produced organic cotton table runner. The fabric is thick drill cotton which offers a sturdy yet soft feel. The edges are neatly stitched with cotton thread giving it a refined finish. The table runner measures 12.5 inches in width and 68 inches in length, making it a perfect size for any dining table.

Care of your plant dyed table runner: limit exposure to sunlight as natural dyes will fade over time if exposed too long. Wash in cold water with like kind colors, line dry or use a dryer. Iron with a hot iron.

The workshop is limited to 8 participants due to the space required to lay out the table runner.

IMPORTANT: please wear shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting natural dyes on. The dyes will stain your clothing.

 

Instructor Biography:

Lucy Huckery is the fiber artist behind Tall Cactus Studio www.tallcactusstudio.com. She makes eco-printed and felted fiber art creations that are both beautiful and functional. Five years ago, she discovered eco printing (botanical contact printing or eco dyeing) and began experimenting on paper using leaves, bark, flowers, and seeds she found in nature. When she tried bundling these same botanicals on fabric, a world of possibilities opened up, and she decided to tailor her craft to focus on fiber art. Today, Lucy transforms eco printed fabric and handmade felt into functional items such as trivets, coasters, placemats, purses, table runners, glasses cases, pin cushions and scarves.
