Abstract Mixed Media

Class: Abstract Mixed Media

Instructor: Beth Lindsay

Medium: painting, mixed media, collage

Date(s): Monday, November 17, 2025

Time: 9am - 4pm

Cost: $100

Class Description:

In this class I will demonstrate and explain some of the techniques I find effective in my mixed media abstract works: mark making and sketching with graphite, crayon and charcoal, layering, collage, and successful use of color. Everyone will leave with a completed and framed 8" x 8" work on paper masterpiece (frame provided).

Instructor Biography:

Beth is a contemporary abstract painter based in Evergreen, CO. Her previous career in interior decorating fostered her love for color, shape and form. Beth sees life in shapes and colors, drawing endless inspiration from everyday encounters—whether in buildings, bodies, gardens, vistas, or distant aerial views. Her paintings have been exhibited in Colorado and Arizona, where they engage viewers with their spirited interplay of color and form.

Supply List:

Hi everyone! I’m looking forward to meeting you all and PLAYING in this class. I will take a very experimental, “no rules” approach to this one. There’s no need to spend a fortune on supplies, Walmart, Hobby Lobby and Michaels have a selection of budget papers, paints , etc. if you don’t already have some. I also love Jerry’s Artarama and Dick Blick. Feel free to bring anything else that you love to use in addition to these:

Heavy Mixed Media or Watercolor Paper, at least 140 lb, 12” x 18” or bigger

Heavy Body Acrylics

  • Liquitex Basics or any cheap acrylics are fine, but Golden Heavy Body is my favorite kind

  • Colors: (these are just suggestions, choose any or all, as long as you have a good selection of warms and cools)
Ultramarine and/or Cobalt Blue, Primary Cyan, Cerulean Blue
    Naphthol or Pyrrole Red
    Yellow Ochre and/or Diarylide Yellow
    Cobalt Violet or Ultramarine Violet
    Cobalt Teal or Turquoise
    Green Gold or Phathlo Green
    Payne’s Gray
    Titan Buff
Any other colors that you love!
White Gesso, I use this as my white paint for mixing color, so be sure to have plenty!

A variety of brushes, some big and some small
  • cheap hardware store flats, 1 ½ inch wide or bigger
  • a handful of decent acrylic brushes, flats, rounds

Water soluble crayons or pencils
  • my favs: Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 Multi Media Watercolor Pencils or Caran d’Ache Neocolor

Gel Medium for collaging, no preference on sheen
Willow charcoal sticks
White eraser
Pencil
Spray bottles (3), travel size bottles are fine
Large water container
Freezer Paper
  • This is will be your palette paper but if you prefer something else, that’s fine too
Rubbing alcohol
Roll of Paper Towels
Silicone scraper (Catalyst wedge) or plastic cards (old credit cards, loyalty cards, etc)
Scissors
White Artist Tape, ¾” or 1” wide
Any collage papers (old paintings, rice paper, scrapbook type papers)
  • I have a TON of this so if you don’t, I can share!

Optional:
  • Golden High Flow Paints, one or two bright colors
These are Golden paints with the pointy tops. I dilute them with water in a small spray bottle to make a color spritz.
